Custom Blades End Chipping for South African Filter Producer

When a High-Speed Line Came to an Abrupt Halt

For filter rod manufacturers, every unplanned shutdown puts delivery commitments at risk. Yet a filter production facility in South Africa, was caught in a frustrating cycle on its high-speed tipping line.

It happened again on a routine night shift. The line stopped. The operator removed the blade—a familiar sight: chipped edge, melted PET residue stubbornly stuck to the surface. A new blade, installed just hours earlier, was already scrap.

This was not an isolated incident. The line faced unscheduled downtime every week due to blade changes. Reject rates were climbing. A batch of urgent export orders was now at risk of delay.

Faced with this persistent problem, the production manager bypassed the usual procurement routine and sent us a direct, urgent request:

“We need a blade that doesn’t chip.”

Not a Catalog Solution

We didn’t respond by shipping a thick catalog. Instead, we listened.

The customer, demonstrating exceptional technical rigor, sent us detailed data: precise blade dimensions, cutter head parameters, high-resolution images of failure points, and even a clear description of what a “good cut” should look like—no chipping, no sticking, smooth edge finish.

With this data, our engineering teams entered a collaborative technical review. Together, we defined a fully customized carbide blade solution tailored to the specific operating conditions:

ParameterAgreed Solution
DimensionForm-fitted to the original mounting dimensions—zero replacement risk
MaterialYL10.2 fine-grain tungsten carbide, hardness 91.5–92.5 HRA—balancing wear resistance and impact toughness
Set PrecisionOD variation ≤0.01mm, thickness variation ≤0.003mm—ensuring dynamic balance and cutting synchronization at high speed
GeometryFlatness ≤0.005mm, precision-fit bore—eliminating vibration from mounting clearance
Edge DesignSpecial angle with micro-edge structure—reducing cutting resistance for PET materials
CoatingTiAlN anti-stick coating—preventing chemical adhesion of melted residue at high temperatures
Acceptance CriteriaResults-driven: no chipping, no sticking, smooth cut face, precise length

Every parameter was a direct response to the customer’s measurements, combined with decades of material application expertise.

A Solution That Simply Works

The first set of custom blades was put to the test on the high-speed line. The result was immediate and unambiguous.

The blades ran continuously for months—no chipping. A second set performed identically. The chipping and sticking that had plagued the line were gone. Operators no longer stopped for mid-run adjustments. The line ran steadily. The export orders that had been at risk shipped on time.

The production manager in South Africa gave a straightforward assessment:

“We sent them our measurements and our problem. They sent back a tobacco cutting blade that ran for months without chipping. No guesswork. No back-and-forth. Just a solution that works.”
